Facilities and resources

The Bell Gully Computer Laboratory is a training facility within the Davis Law Library, comprising 15 computers, data projector, video and sound equipment. This facility provides the Davis Law Library with the means to ensure that all law students are able to acquire the requisite skills for effective legal research. Davis Law Library staff offer an extensive range of courses year round for students wishing to improve their electronic research skills. Group tutorials are provided for generic law databases, with individual tuition provided for the more specialist databases. Crossdisciplinary database training is also available. Students are also welcome to use the laboratory for research whenever it is not required for training.

A student computer lab and general computer facilities are available in the Davis Law Library. These can be used for internet access as well as word processing and legal database access.

The Davis Law Library staff provide computer training for undergraduate students at the beginning of each semester.

The Faculty of Law utilises information technology extensively to support continuous improvement in administration, teaching, and learning. Specialist IT services provide postgraduate students with access to a growing wealth of legal research-related information. Computing facilities are provided in our supervised computer lab of 28 computers housed within the Davis Law Library. This includes Wireless Network access for laptops. There are also computers dedicated to the use of postgraduate students in the Davis Law Library and the Postgraduate Common Room. Access is provided to a range of New Zealand and international databases, and word-processing, spreadsheet, e-mail, and web-browsing software. The University provides all postgraduate students with email accounts and access to the internet and laser printing facilities.

Access to the University's online learning management system is provided. This provides access to course notes, discussion groups, and class announcements.

A common room (Building 801, level 2) is provided for students and is an ideal place for students to meet, discuss classes, and make social arrangements. A student café, coffee bar and vending machines offer light meals and drinks.

The Student Learning Centre (SLC) provides professional development for all University of Auckland students. The centre facilitates the acquisition of effective academic learning and performance skills in students, and helps those who encounter difficulties in their studies. Academic tutors teach process skills that are crucial to academic success. The centre's programmes cater for the learning needs of all students from first-year undergraduates to postgraduates.

The Davis Law Library, one of 14 libraries comprising The University of Auckland Library system, is the largest law library in New Zealand with a collection of approximately 130,000 printed volumes and 29,200 microforms. Whilst the focus of the collection is on the five principal Common Law jurisdictions: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom, and United States of America, materials from other jurisdictions are also available. Electronic services feature strongly in the Davis Law Library and access is provided to some 800 bibliographic databases networked to members of the University both on and off campus, plus other specialist legal databases accessible only within the library system. An extensive collection of over 87,000 e-journals and 343,000  electronic books are also available.

A subject librarian service is available to students. Research consultations, research assistance and current awareness services form part of the subject librarian service.
