Faculty of Law
Careers
It’s a good idea to think about your life after University. A law degree from Auckland will give you a foundation of knowledge and skills that can lead to many different careers.
About half of our graduates begin their careers in law firms, both large and small, in Auckland and elsewhere in New Zealand. The rest of our graduates are found in other professional firms (such as accounting or consulting), commerce and industry, local government, government departments, universities, and international and community organizations. The Auckland LLB is highly regarded by overseas employers. You will find our graduates in firms, companies and organizations in the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and numerous other countries.
The University Careers Service can help you with your career planning and job search throughout the course of your studies. The Careers Service provides assistance with CV and cover letter writing, conducts practice interviews with students, and assists with many aspects of the career planning process. This is done through workshops, careers evenings involving current lawyers, one-to-one appointments and a drop-in service at Law School.
The Faculty of Law, in cooperation with the University Careers Service assists students to participate in the Law Graduate Recruitment Programme in March each year. The firms that participate in this programme are mostly (but not exclusively) national and medium to large law firms. They recruit for two types of positions; Summer Clerks (summer work typically for Part III students) and Law Clerks (for final-year students seeking graduate positions). Summer Clerk opportunities often lead to employment after your studies have finished.
The Careers Service advertises job vacancies online at www.auckland.ac.nz/careerhub. Employer presentations are also advertised and it is recommended that students attend these for any organisations that they wish to apply to. Recruitment by tax consultancies, key government departments, management consultancies and accounting and finance firms also occurs throughout March. Careers fairs involving law firms and other general organisations that value law graduates will take place between March –May. Attendance at these events will help students gain more information about the wide range of career options available to law graduates.
University Careers Services organise Careers Seminars throughout the year down at Law School. Watch CareerHub and the noticeboards on Level 2 for dates and times. The Careers drop-in service (no appointment required) at Law School operates on Mondays from 12.30 to 1.30 from Room 3.08, opposite the Law School Reception Office, and 30 minute one-to-one appointments can be booked between 1.30-4pm on Mondays through CareerHub – www.auckland.ac.nz/careerhub. This is an impartial service. You can discuss anything about jobs and careers, including what’s out there and how to get into it.
