Facilities and resources

Our faculty has the resources to support your studies, including a postgraduate common room. The Davis Law Library has the largest collection of legal literature in New Zealand. We also have wireless network access for laptops.

Postgraduate Students' Common Room

A common room is provided for postgraduate students (Building 803, room 2.15) and is an ideal place for postgraduate students to meet, discuss classes, and make social arrangements. The room is also equipped with computers, printers, telephone, microwave and refrigerator. The faculty keeps students informed by means of a notice board in this room. You may apply for swipe card access to this room for a non-refundable cost of $10.

Email accounts

All postgraduate students will be provided with an email address on enrolment and all classes will maintain email lists.

Online learning management system - CECIL

Access to the University's online learning management system is provided. This provides access to course notes, discussion groups, and class announcements.

Postgraduate computers and study space

In addition to the general computer facilities in the Davis Law Library, several computers in the Davis Law Library are provided for the exclusive use of postgraduate students. These can be used for internet access as well as word processing and legal database access. Further space is provided for postgraduate study and discussion in rooms set aside for postgraduate students in the Davis Law Library.

Computer training

The Davis Law Library staff provide computer training for undergraduate students at the beginning of each semester.

Staff and student seminar series

Postgraduate students are welcome to attend the staff seminar series run throughout the year, with Auckland academic staff and visiting academics presenting research papers and work in progress. Research students will also be encouraged to present their work throughout the year in the autumn and spring student seminar series.

Subsidised attendance at Law conferences

The faculty will subsidise attendance by postgraduate students at conferences run by the Legal Research Foundation throughout the year.

The Davis Law Library

The Davis Law Library, one of 14 libraries comprising The University of Auckland Library system, is the largest law library in New Zealand with a collection of approximately 130,000 printed volumes and 29,200 microforms. Whilst the focus of the collection is on the five principal Common Law jurisdictions: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom, and United States of America, materials from other jurisdictions are also available. Electronic services feature strongly in the Davis Law Library and access is provided to some 800 bibliographic databases networked to members of the University both on and off campus, plus other specialist legal databases accessible only within the library system. An extensive collection of over 87,000 e-journals and 343,000  electronic books are also available.

A subject librarian service is available to students. Research consultations, research assistance and current awareness services form part of the subject librarian service.

Students enrolled at The University of Auckland have access to the following range of services:
• Print, audio-visual and microform collections
• Borrowing facilities
• Library web pages and electronic resources (in libraries, at other campus locations and off-campus via the authorised dial-in facilities)
• Information services
• Intercampus Library Delivery Service (ICLDS)
• Interlibrary loan and document delivery services
• Study and group discussion facilities
• Photocopying and computer printing facilities.

Separate study and computer facilities are provided for postgraduate students.

Bell Gully Computer Laboratory

The Bell Gully Computer Laboratory is a training facility within the Davis Law Library, comprising 15 computers, data projector, video and sound equipment. This facility provides the Davis Law Library with the means to ensure that all law students are able to acquire the requisite skills for effective legal research. Davis Law Library staff offer an extensive range of courses year round for students wishing to improve their electronic research skills. Group tutorials are provided for generic law databases, with individual tuition provided for the more specialist databases. Crossdisciplinary database training is also available. Students are also welcome to use the laboratory for research whenever it is not required for training.

Law online computer suite

In addition to the Bell Gully Computer Laboratory, the Davis law Library provides a Law OnLine Computer Suite for student research. The suite contains 16 computers plus printing facilities.

The Upper Chamber

The Upper Chamber is a new computer suite situated on the mezzanine floor of the Davis Law Library comprising 28 computers for law student research and writing. Scanning and printing facilities are also provided.

Information Technology

The Faculty of Law utilises information technology extensively to support continuous improvement in administration, teaching, and learning. Specialist IT services provide postgraduate students with access to a growing wealth of legal research-related information. Computing facilities are provided in our supervised computer lab of 28 computers housed within the Davis Law Library. This includes Wireless Network access for laptops. There are also computers dedicated to the use of postgraduate students in the Davis Law Library and the Postgraduate Common Room. Access is provided to a range of New Zealand and international databases, and word-processing, spreadsheet, e-mail, and web-browsing software. The University provides all postgraduate students with email accounts and access to the internet and laser printing facilities.

Student Learning Centre

The Student Learning Centre (SLC) provides professional development for all University of Auckland students. The centre facilitates the acquisition of effective academic learning and performance skills in students, and helps those who encounter difficulties in their studies. Academic tutors teach process skills that are crucial to academic success. The centre's programmes cater for the learning needs of all students from first-year undergraduates to postgraduates.

The Graduate Centre

The Graduate Centre is a division of Student Administration and provides information and administrative services to potential and current postgraduate students. The Graduate Centre contains the following facilities and resources: Postgraduate Student Advisers, PC computers with internet access, a meeting room that can be booked by staff and postgraduate students, an area where postgraduate students can relax over lunch, and faculty information.
