Te Rakau Ture was established in 1990 and since then has grown to play a very important role in the lives of Maori students who study at the University of Auckland. We welcome everyone to join our roopu and participate in all of the exciting initiatives that our elected committee run throughout the academic year. Not only do these events and relationships provide a sense of whanaungatanga and support, but encourage Maori from all over the motu to come together and learn with one another.

TRT annual events

TRT Noho
In March TRT in conjunction with the MAP and PASS programmes, host a noho marae for Part 2 and above. As well as whanaungatanga and forming valuable study groups, the sessions at the noho are there to benefit those who are going into part 2 with study techniques and skills.

TRT Haerenga

Each year TRT spends a week together visiting high schools outside of Auckland to promote coming to Law School and Uni in general. It isn’t all work though and as well as some really funny moments with the high school students, you make lasting friendships and do a lot of fun activities.

Shared Lunch

The best way we know how to get together as Māori is over kai so we often have shared lunches throughout the year just to catch up with each other and keep up to date with events and notices.

Hunga Roia

This event is one loved by all. You get to spend 3-4 days dressed up to the nines in your lawyer gears and attend seminars either in Wellington or Hamilton. It is an awesome opportunity to meet Maori lawyers and judges and those high up in the legal profession and listen to their experiences. It is also cool to watch one of your peers partake in the Maori Moot finals.

TRT vs NTM Netball and League

An annual favourite is this sporting event where we challenge our Whanau from NTM to a game of Netball and League. Although this is done only once a year, there has been talk of extending this. There is always a kai and mean as prize giving afterwards.

TRT Haakari Whakamutunga

TRT’s end of year dinner is a special event that happens every year. It is a night to celebrate the achievements of all and to have a kai and reminisce about the amazing year. Special guests and Whanau and friends are also invited to share in the evening.

There are many more events throughout the year that TRT hosts so if you want to get in on the fun please contact us and get registered or just show up to the events and we’ll meet you then!

Mauri Ora!
