Courses

Intensives
Courses are held throughout both semesters. They are taught predominantly by visiting guest lecturers from New Zealand and overseas. The courses are held over five days, usually Wednesday - Friday and the following Monday and Tuesday to allow a break over the weekend. Some intensive courses have a slightly different structure this year so we encourage students to carefully note the dates of their courses.
Assessments are due up to 12 weeks following the last day of the course. The due dates for all courses with the full course outline are listed on the postgraduate law website under Courses. Students taking intensives should check both the dates of the course and the assessment dates to ensure that they fit into their workload
Full Semester
Full semester courses are held weekly over the course of a 12 week semester. These courses are taught by the Faculty of Law and the Department of Commercial Law.
Research
For those students wanting a research or self study component of their degree they can consider a dissertation, major thesis or minor thesis. Permission must be given prior to enrolment for these courses of study. Students wishing to commence research of this sort should discuss their intentions with the Postgraduate Manager well before the start of semester to ensure their application can be processed for the start of semester.
Specialisation for LLM
Students may elect to have their LLM degree awarded in either Corporate and Commercial Law, Environmental Law, Litigation and Dispute Resolution, Human Rights Law, International Law, or Public Law if they complete a minimum of 90 points out of the 120 points for the degree in one of those areas. A specialisation will appear on their certificate as "Master of Law".
Full semester courses
You can enrol in, and add or delete semester-long courses, without penalty, on Student Services Online up until the end of the second week of each semester. You are able to withdraw from semester-long courses until the third week before the end of lectures. However, tuition fees are not refundable in these cases, and a "withdrawal" will appear on your academic record. This will count as a zero towards your average grade calculation.
Intensive courses
At your request the Postgraduate Manager can delete you from intensive courses up until ten working days prior to the intensive course commencement date, without penalty. Course materials must be purchased from the University Book Shop (UBS). Students are notified by email when the materials become available.
If you are unable to continue a course you need to consult with the Postgraduate Manager. Should you need to withdraw from an intensive course please consult with the Postgraduate Manager no later than three weeks before the due date of the research paper or the date of the examination, whichever is the later. However, tuition fees are not refundable in these cases, and a "withdrawal" will appear on your academic record. This will count as a zero towards your average grade calculation.
